COVER LETTERS
Think of a resume as a bullet-point snapshot of your skills and experience. A cover letter is your chance to tell
the story behind those bullet points. It allows you to showcase your passion for the specific role and company,
demonstrate how your unique qualifications align with their needs, and make a lasting first impression. Like a
resume, your cover letter needs to be customized to each position you apply to. By tailoring your cover letter
to each position you apply for, you demonstrate a genuine interest in the opportunity and the company. A wellcrafted cover letter can push you to the next step in the hiring process.
To be efective, your letter should convince the
employer of 2 things:
1.
2.
That you are a good match with what they’re looking for
and will add value to their organization
That you’ve done your research and really believe this job
and this organization are the right fit for you
Tips for Customizing Cover Letters

Highlight relevant skills and experiences: Carefully read
the job description and identify the skills and experiences
they’re looking for. Weave these elements into your cover
letter, showcasing how your background aligns with the
position’s requirements.
Make sure your letter adds value: Even though it’s called
a “cover” letter, it’s often read after your resume, so
make sure it goes beyond the basic information about
your qualifications listed in your resume. Your letter is an
opportunity to go more in-depth, focus on the future, and
explain how your skills and experiences will help you to
contribute in this role.
Demonstrate your knowledge of the company: Research
the company’s mission, values, and recent projects.
Mention something specific that resonates with you and
explain why you’d be a valuable addition to their team.
Show your enthusiasm: Express your excitement about the
opportunity and the company culture. Your enthusiasm can
be contagious and make a lasting impression.
